NEIBA's Own Andy Baylock To Recieve ABCA's Highest Honor In 2011

Former University of Connecticut baseball head coach Andy Baylock has been selected as the 2011 recipient of the ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award as announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

The ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez award is the highest honor given out by the ABCA. Baylock will be presented the award on January 7, 2011, during the ABCA Convention in Nashville, Tenn.

"The entire University of Connecticut community congratulates Andy Baylock on this prestigious honor," says UConn Director of Athletics Jeffrey Hathaway. "Andy’s lifelong dedication to the sport of baseball on a national level makes him a truly deserving recipient of the Lefty Gomez Award."

"Andy has served our University for more than four decades and has devoted his entire career to the development of young people. He has been an outstanding coach, educator, leader and mentor. We are proud of his many accomplishments and grateful that he continues to serve UConn through his current work as Director of UConn Football Alumni and Community Affairs."

Baylock, who retired as UConn’s head baseball coach in May 2003 after a 24-year run in which he posted a 556-492-8 record, guided the Huskies to BIG EAST Championship titles in 1990 and 1994. He also led the Huskies into NCAA Tournament play three times.

Including his tenure as an assistant baseball coach, Baylock compiled an 822-614-11 record over 39 years and, at the time of his retirement, had coached 1,446 of the 2,327 games (62.2-percent) in UConn’s baseball history. Baylock was an assistant baseball coach with the Huskies from 1964-79, helping UConn to the College World Series in 1965, 1972 and 1979, before assuming the head coaching reins in 1980.

Boston Globe Article

NEIBA All Star Game A Success

Despite some tough weather and with the help of the Boston Red Sox we were able to have a very successful day.  The game was cut short after three innings due to hurricane like storms.  Pitching and defense were the story in the first two innings with no runs being scored.  The only two runs of the game were scored in the bottom of the third.  Matt Sucharewicz led off the bottom of the third with a singled through the right side, he then scored on a two run home run by Drew Tambling.  The next three batters were retired and then the rain came.  The Fenway staff was great all day and handled the issue superbly.  Congratulations to the NEIBA award winners.  The Kevin Burr assistant coach of the year award was given to Pat Mason of Northeastern University.  The Jack Butterfield Award was given to Bob Whelan of Dartmouth College.  The Andy Baylock Award was given to John Doldoorian.  To see all the past winners check out the links on the left hand side of the page.  Congratulations again to the award winners.

MBCA and NEIBA negotiate deal with MIAA for Mass HS tournament games

College baseball coaches who are members of the NEIBA will be allowed into MIAA tournament baseball games at neutral sites for half-price by showing their membership card negotiated by both the NEIBA and the MBCA.  We will hope to increase this discount in # of games and amount of money in the future.  This is a pilot program and we all look forward to fostering this relationship with the MIAA in the future.  A great deal of thanks goes to MBCA President Kirk Fredricks, Bill Glaine, Deputy Director MIAA and NU associate head coach Pat Mason for all their efforts to bring this policy to fruition.

NEIBA Reception at the ABCA Convention

The annual NEIBA reception at the ABCA National Convention was once again a great success.  It was a   great forum in which to extend our congratulations to Coach Jim Stone on his induction into the ABCA Hall of Fame.  Preisdent Tim Shea and current UMass Lowell Coach Ken Harring did a wonderful job toasting Coach Stone.  There was a great turnout with over 100 guests attending.  It continues to be a nice opportunity for New England coaches to gather together and enjoy each other’s company at the ABCA  National Convention.  It was great to see some coaches with New England roots join the festivities.  Stopping by was Tim Corbin, the head coach at Vanderbilt and his lovely wife, Pete Egbert of Misericordia University, Mike McCormack of Saint Mary’s College, Jon Martin of Vassar, and coaching legends Tom O’Connell of Brandeis and Princeton, and Tinker Connelly of Northeastern and the ABCA Board of Directors. Some others in attendance who, although not college coaches, do great things for New England baseball were Sumner Dubrow of Diamond Sports, Mark Andrews of Extra Innings, Judy Scarafile of the Cape Cod Baseball League and Joe Murphy of On Deck Sports. We look forward to another wonderful gathering next year in Nashville.
